How Can You Get Rid of Bedbugs?

Although bedbugs are of no real danger to individuals, because they do not spread diseases, they can certainly be a nuisance. These unwanted pests suck the blood of their victims throughout the night, leaving behind itchy, annoying bites. Unfortunately, these bugs are not always easy to detect and they are even more difficult to remove from a home. It is imperative individuals know the warning signs of these bugs and how a professional exterminator can get rid of them.

Signs of Bugs in a Home

Cimex lectularius Linnaeus is its formal name and this bug can certainly pack a punch when it comes to bites. Because it feeds on its victim’s blood, there are some telltale signs that accompany this type of infestation. If any of the following signs are noticed by a homeowner, a professional exterminator needs to be called in right away.

  • Smears of blood on bedding and pillows is one of the most common signs of an infestation. When a bug bites its victim during sleep, it releases anticoagulants that help the blood to flow freely. Once the bug becomes overly filled with blood, it will sometimes leave behind blood smears as it makes its way across the bed. Sometimes, the blood smears are fresh and red, other times they may appear blackish.
  • The egg casing left behind by hatched bugs are rounded and elongated. These waxy casings are shed in different areas, most often in corners of the mattress or around the bedframes. If egg casings are found, there is a good chance there are a high number of bugs in the home.
  • Individuals may also see coffee ground-like residue in the corners of their mattresses. This is the digested blood of the victim which comes out as a waste product. If this is seen in large numbers, there are many bugs feeding on the victims of the home.
  • Another sign of these bugs is a musty scent. Although the scent that is released by these bugs is typically not detected until they are in large numbers, it can be noticeable. Musty smells should always be addressed, since they can sometimes be caused by bugs.
