4 Signs It’s Time for a New Box Spring

A good night’s sleep is valuable to us, which is why Americans spend over $17 billion on mattresses every year. But how do you know it’s time to replace a box spring mattress support?

There are certain tell-tale signs, like when it’s worn all the way through. However, there are other signs that you might’ve missed that signal the need to buy a new mattress box spring.

Your Box Spring

First, let’s talk about your box spring. What is it designed to do, and what happens if you wait too long to replace it?

Your box spring functions as your mattress’ support. It absorbs shock to reduce wear and tear on your mattress and keeps it off of the floor.

When it wears out, it can damage you mattress and actually make your mattress heat up due to poor ventilation. It can also start causing physical problems and disrupting your sleep — the number one reason people replace their mattresses.

Not sure if your bed is due for an upgrade? Here are four signs that it’s time for a new box spring.

  1. It’s Been a While

Most box springs and mattresses last about 10 years. If you invested in a high quality one, you might be able to extend it for 20 years.

If it’s been longer than 10 years, it’s probably time to get a new one. Check to see when you purchased your box spring and mattress.

  1. Your Bed is Squeaking

Don’t ignore a squeaky, creaky bed. Strange noises coming from your bed aren’t always your bed frame, it could be your box spring too.

The metal frame can be worn through or the wooden slats can be swollen and rub against each other. Press down on your bed to see if you hear any squeaking or other funny sounds.

  1. You’re Buying a New Mattress

When you’re buying a new mattress, it’s a good time to consider replacing your box spring too. Why not kill two birds with one stone and take care of both at the same time?

Your new mattress might not fit your old box spring anyways. This way you’ll have a whole new bed set up to help you get enough sleep.

  1. You’re Losing Sleep

There are many reasons for you to struggle with getting enough sleep. Our bodies change as we get older, and we have different sleep patterns for a variety of reasons.

If you’ve tried everything to get a good night’s sleep, it’s time to consider if maybe your box spring worn out. See if it’s sagging, a bad fit for your  mattress, or just not offering the right kind of support you need.
