Don’t Make These Six Costly Kitchen Renovation Mistakes

Choosing to renovate your kitchen can be a wonderful thing, but if you’re not careful with your decisions and budget, the project can quickly get out of hand and end up costing you a lot more money than you had anticipated, or can afford.

To help you avoid overspending on your kitchen renovation, here are 6 things to avoid:

Kitchen remodel mistakes you don't want to make | Real Homes

  1. Not buying your kitchen appliances first

You’ll find it so much easier to match your cabinets to your appliances, than the other way around, so always try to choose and buy your appliances before deciding upon countertops or cabinets.

  1. Spending too much on cabinets and appliances

While you need both of these for a successful kitchen renovation, it’s important to do your research before making any purchases, to avoid spending more money than necessary on luxury items which aren’t essential. Oftentimes, there are cheaper alternatives that are just as good, and have the same look and feel as high-end cabinets and expensive appliances.

  1. Not measuring up accurately

If you’re working with an experienced renovations company or general contractor, they will assist with any measurements that need to be made, but you will need to be sure of them before buying any fixtures, hardware or appliances, to make sure they’ll fit where you want them to go.

  1. Scrimping on lighting

There are times when minimal lighting is good in a kitchen, but for other times, such as when you’re preparing food or entertaining, you’ll need plenty of light. Having lighting options in a kitchen is really important, but something that is often overlooked during renovations. Talk to your general contractor about what lighting you want, and where it should go, and make sure there is enough light for when you need it, and where you need it. fail to get this right, and you’ll simply have to spend out on it afterwards.

  1. Not having the backsplash professionally done

It’s perfectly understandable to want to try and save money during a kitchen remodeling by carrying out some of the work yourself, but unless you’re an experienced tiler, the backsplash really should be left to the pros. There’s nothing worse than a wonky backsplash, or one that overhangs where it shouldn’t. Get it wrong and you’ll have to pay out to have it redone properly.

  1. Failing to make the floor level

This commonly made mistake can easily be avoided by using a professional kitchen renovation company, but if you choose the wrong one, or try and do this aspect of the renovation yourself, you might not find out until you’re halfway through laying the flooring, that it hasn’t been levelled properly. This can be a very costly mistake.

Some mistakes can happen when you’re renovating your kitchen, but major ones such as the six listed above, will hopefully never happen if you choose a company who are experienced in renovating kitchens, and who have all the right skills, equipment and training to get it right, first time.
